The Institute for Politics and Economy of Southeastern Europe (IPESE) is organizing a panel discussion marking 65 years since the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Belgrade. The event will take place on Sunday, 6 September 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mona Plaza Hotel in Belgrade.
The speakers will be:
- Prof. Dr. Dragana Mitrović, Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Belgrade;
- Zoran Milivojević, diplomat;
- Dušan Spasojević, diplomat.
The First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries, held in Belgrade in September 1961, was one of the most significant events in the history of Yugoslav diplomacy and an important milestone in the development of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Sixty-five years later, IPESE’s panel will provide an opportunity to discuss the historical significance of the Non-Aligned Movement, the role of Belgrade and Yugoslavia in its emergence and development, as well as the contemporary relevance of non-alignment amid geopolitical transformation and renewed divisions in international relations.
Particular attention will be devoted to the place that the legacy of the Non-Aligned Movement may hold in today’s world and to what the experience of the 1961 Belgrade Conference can contribute to our understanding of contemporary international affairs.
